Gifted Education-What does the public think of programs in Massachusetts?

I am starting this blog in response to a course I am taking on how to blog and how to teach students to blog.

The topic, gifted education, is one that I worry about as I fear programs for precocious and bright learners will drop more and more to the sidelines as AYP testing focuses attention more and more on academic underacheivers and not on academically bright children or even overacheivers. I panic that more of our brightest will continue to be turned off to the rote rigor of education and the curtailing of creative skills in order to provide more test prep time..

I would like to hear others opinions on this topic, because maybe I am pressing the panic button and schools are differentiating enough so that bright and creative students are not bored. Please reassure me if this is the case, or angst with me if you, too, see that creative units, music, arts, physical education, are getting short shrift. Even more, if you have a gifted program in your schools, tell me about how it works. Also, let me know if you feel your child, at whatever academic level he/she works, is loving school and finding it an engaging place to learn.
